We Have Escaped!

After being tied up at home during Jim's 15 month recovery from his surgeries, we are a little more than stir crazy! I was reading Gallamore West's blog the other day (forgive me, I can't recall which one) that gave me an idea for the perfect escape plan. Where did we go? Well, while there, we saw lots of these

And ate a bunch of this
We were surrounded by others with the same idea
This particular place has been in operation since 1954 and is working hard to maintain an American family tradition
And we saw these two guys there

Now do you know where we went? The Family Drive-In Theater in Stephens City, Virginia! One of only 400 operating still in the United States and ranked #10, this theater is truly an American icon! We ate from the concession stand (best corn dogs ever!) got the giant bucket of popcorn ( not their largest though, which is a whopping 130 ounces!) and saw a double-feature (ticket price per adult, a mere $8.00!). Two movies for only $8.00? Such a deal! We didn't really care if we saw the first feature (Grown Ups 2) but were eager to see The Lone Ranger. It was a good movie, I got to see parts of the country that I hadn't seen since childhood and what can beat hearing The William Tell Overture while watching Silver stand on his hind legs before galloping away?

The movie let out around 1:00am, so we'd made arrangements to stay at a nearby Holiday Inn - comfy, quiet and clean! Today we're going to explore the area a little, see if we happen upon any good yard sales and then head for home - only an hour away. We hope to bring the grand babes up soon to see one of the cartoon movies playing. I think that they'll be awestruck at watching a movie on such a huge screen outdoors!

Do a search and see if you have a drive-in theater near you! It's worth a little road trip and so much fun!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a wonderful weekend! Hugs, Leena

    1. You're so right Leslie and after you've been cooped up for so long it's hard to talk yourself into going out at times but I' sure glad that we did! I hope you find a drive in near you or something else fun like that. Hmmm maybe I'll go to the roller rink next! LOL Thanks for visiting! Hugs, Leena

  2. OmGosh how fun for you two! There is one in Lakeland where my kids live. I have never been but would love to go....I haven't been to a drive in movie place since my kids were babies! Use to love the drive-ins. It's so cool there are still some around!

The one in Lakeland on Saturdays even does a Flea Market! Never gone to that either and I lived in Lakeland for 25 years before I met Jack. I need to get on the ball lol!

Really glad and happy for you two that you got away and had time for just the two of you....everybody needs that once in a while!

    Hugs and Love!

    1. You know how much we needed it Debi and yes, it was such fun! You should try to check out the one in Lakeland, if it isn't too far. It's weird. It's not like there's anything special going on there, but somehow, just being there is special! I think it's my nostalgic side coming out! There's a flea market nearby that I want to check out another time. Looks like fun! Thanks for being here! Hugs, Leena

  4. Oh, what a nice escape. You have to escape sometimes, even if it's for a few hours. I haven't been to a drive-in in many years.

  5. Sounds like fun. I haven't been to a movie theater in a long time, a drive in movie probably not in 30 years.

  7. Ooooh that is so much fun, Leena! I'm so glad you got out and enjoyed life.
There is a drive in about 45 min from my new home... you've inspired me to look at it closer and make some plans.
Hope you are doing okay! Think of you so very often!

    1. Hey Sweetie! So good to see you! We really were glad to get away. It was a little rushed but provided a nice break. We hope to take a longer "real" vacation later this summer. You really should see if there is a drive in near you! If so, grab a bunch of your old hometown friends and go on out for movie night! It's such kitschy fun and I think if more of us get interested, we can help maintain these great theaters! How's everything going out there? Drop me an email when you have time - would love to see pics of the new place too! Love ya! Leena
